Abstract

At the turn from the 14th to the 15th century, most religious orders sought to restore the obedience to their rules by reforms of their habits of life. In the course of these reforms the spirituality of nuns or monks and vernacular religious texts played an important role. The session seeks to reflect on these reforms in the Cistercian Order and the spirituality they were inspired by, taking the south-west German Nunnery of Lichtenthal as an example. Due to its library, which has been kept until now without considerable loss from its foundation in 1245 onwards and the good reports of vivid performance of monastic reforms, Lichtenthal forms an ideal matrix for the investigation of this issue.
