Organiser:Helen Fulton, Department of English, University of Sydney
Moderator/Chair:Stephen Knight, School of English, Communication & Philosophy, Cardiff University
Abstract

This session articulates the relevance of cultural theory to an understanding of medieval texts. Beginning with a discussion of medieval studies and 18th-century medievalism, the session explores a range of texts, including Sir Orfeo. medieval English romance, and medieval English and Welsh poetry. The papers are theorised in terms of contemporary issues in cultural studies, including medievalism, construction of state power, and urban space. In engaging with medieval texts and their intersections with contemporary cultural theory, the session acknowledges the pioneering work of Stephen Knight, who is chairing this session.
