Abstract

Papers concern the production of books in medieval towns, their circulation and uses for religious and secular purposes. Questions dealt with include the relationship between the practical literacy skills of town-dwellers and the development of urban schools, interest in reading and collecting books, and manuscripts containing ‘heretical’ texts.
