Abstract

This is one of a series of sessions on medieval urban literacy. It concerns a theme which was discussed also at last year's IMC, in the session 'Varieties of Urban Literacy, III: From City to Heaven - Urban Testaments and Literate Mentalities'. This year, the Low Countries are at the centre of our attention: epigraphy, the memorial practices of the secular clergy (of Bruges) and remembrance of the dead as a tool in the cultural construction of the family - all primarily in urban environments.
