Abstract

Death and especially the afterlife were central themes in the Middle Ages. Precautions for the 'last journey' were made during one's lifetime as well as posthumously. This session will focus on the traces the final journey left on medieval objects, by looking at tombs and the iconography of death and the afterlife.
