Abstract

Throughout the corpus of more than 200 late medieval Mären, travelling is of outstanding importance. Not only students on their way to their universities, but also princes, monks, knights, merchants, and even the whole population of a city (Der Wiener Meerfahrt) travel (or seem to travel) in very different ways and for manifold purposes and reasons. This section both analyses the spectre of travelling experiences depicted in Mären and asks for the narratological impact travelling meant for the genre. Newly edited Mären (DFG-project 'Edition und Kommentierung der deutschen Versnovellistik des 13. und 14. Jh.', Tübingen, Köln) will be used as textual basis of this section's discussions.
