| Abstract | Different archives and institutions of Andalucía (Spain), and elsewhere, have preserved until now a good number of Arabic legal documents, dated mostly from the last quarter of the 15th century. Together with other documentary collections from the Mediterranean, these Arabic documents give us a new dimension in the history of Islamic medieval societies. The main purpose of this panel is to introduce the new studies carried out in Spain on these documents and will focus on the 'where', 'why' and 'how' the documents were produced, used, and preserved. In doing so, the papers will address several crucial questions: How can we find new other unknown collections? Why Islamic medieval societies did not keep the documents they used and produced? What was the main function and activities of the Islamic notaries in Granada? |
