Abstract

This session will examine objects that travelled from the Byzantine Empire to the Latin West during the Middle Ages. Specifically all three papers will focus on the reception of these objects in the West and how, in a new context, they took on new meanings and inspired artistic developments. The session will be an exploration of how Byzantine art and devotion was perceived and received by Latin Christians. The three papers will provide a broad chronological and geographical spectrum, from post-Byzantine Italy in the 11th century to England and Paris in the 12th and 13th centuries.
