Abstract

The 12th century witnessed several high-profile conflicts between representatives of the Church and secular rulers, in England as well as on the continent. The conflicts on English soil, however, have more often been studied from a national perspective than in the context of a broader European development. Through this session's focus will be set on various ways in which the aims, claims, and conflicts of the papacy were received and understood by English thinkers and political actors, and possible ways in which the papacy affected understanding and action in the English realm.
