Abstract | Paper -a:
The overarching aim of this paper is to challenge the widely accepted view that medieval Iberian 'Aljamiado' literature exists merely as a reproduction of preexisting Islamic texts. I shall argue that the Mudejar and Morisco communities of late medieval Spain in fact exhibited a deep familiarity with canonical Western European rhetoric and literary production. The paper focuses in particular on the role of the wolf in the Poema de Yúçuf as an example of a rhetorical point of contact between Aljamiado literary production and canonical collections of Greco-Roman and medieval fables, medieval etymologies, bestiaries, and biographical narratives.

This paper examines the bronze doors made for the Pardon portal of Cordoba cathedral in the 1370s. It analyses their formal relationship with the doors made for the Almohad mosque of Seville in the 1170s, and those made for Toledo cathedral's Pardon Portal in 1337. It also assesses the content and meaning of the Islamic and Latin inscriptions that are found on the door rims and knockers, and suggests that these commemorate the conversion of Cordoba's mosque into a cathedral in 1236.
