Abstract

Nowadays the term 'martial arts' conjures up images of exotic individual combat skills harking from the Far East. Yet the study of arms has never been neglected in the West. From the later Middle Ages there was a great irruption of martial science literature which can be used to reconstruct a body of technique for both armed combat and self defense. Those sources can be supplemented by others which can trace some of that technique several centuries earlier still. A selection of sources will be shown and the reconstructions from them demonstrated.
