Abstract

This session will focus on early Byzantine Christian sources for the study of the family. Nathan Howard analyses the writings of the Cappadocians on family, especially Gregory of Nyssa's life of his sister Macrina. Fotis Vasileiou also draws on the writings of the Cappadocians to explore both biological and constructed relationships in late antique Christian families. Michel Kaplan too is concerned with a celebrated Christian female, Theodora of Thessaloniki, considering her Life as a piece of family literature.
