Abstract | In this session three different kinds of source are used to explore how contemporary Normans understood and presented their past in the century after the duchy's annexation to France. Paper A uses early 13th-century vernacular chronicles and focuses on the career of Richard the Lionheart; paper B uses Latin annals to assess immediate responses to annexation; and paper C examines the commemorative practices through which contemporary Normans remembered their dead. |
