Abstract

In this session three different kinds of source are used to explore how contemporary Normans understood and presented their past in the century after the duchy's annexation to France. Paper A uses early 13th-century vernacular chronicles and focuses on the career of Richard the Lionheart; paper B uses Latin annals to assess immediate responses to annexation; and paper C examines the commemorative practices through which contemporary Normans remembered their dead.
