Abstract

This session stresses the realistic and constructive contacts between north and south. The developing monarchies of Norway and Novgorod were competitors for the appreciable tribute income to be drawn from the Sami of northern Fennoscandia, whilst other contacts with the Sami involved also trade and attempts to convert them to Christianity. Developments in the north were affected by important journeys to Rome, and travels between north and south contributed to a new northern identity.
