Abstract

This session focuses on elite families and later families in action. Leonora Neville considers the presentation of 'aristocratic' families in the history of Nikephoros Byrennios, and argues that he presents us with a medieval reading of classical Roman political practice. Athanasia Stavrou explores the nature and administration of family property in Thessaloniki and its broader area in the 14th and 15th centuries. Ann Christys takes a comparative approach, examining the depiction of female rulers in Arabic literature and comparing them with two non-Muslim queens.
