Abstract

This session forms the first part of a two-part series presenting current research on medievalism and antiquarianism in Finland and the eastern Baltic area. All the papers deal with modern historiography and the discovery, construction, and even invention of a useful medieval society and imagery in the region. The first session focuses in particular on art historical and monumental issues regarding how castles, churches and monasteries have been dealt with when considering concepts of medieval Finland and Karelia. The papers are all related to forthcoming dissertations and monographs.
