Abstract

The Dominican scholar John of Paris is best known today for the tract On Royal and Papal Power, often considered a contribution to the dispute between Pope Boniface VIII and the French king Philippe IV. This session explores John's approach to a number of ideas and problems ranging from sacramental debates to jurisdiction and the origins of capitalism. It forms part of the 'John of Paris: Beyond Royal and Papal Power' strand.
