Abstract

This session examines aspects of curial government in a European context, looking at the reciprocal relationship between the papacy and secular or clerical institutions/individuals. The first paper analyses the influence of papacy on internal policies and morals in Livonia, the second will discuss European policies of John XXII, while the third paper explores the relationship between Iceland and the Avignon papacy. The final paper will examine the role of 'foreign' advisors and ambassadors at the curia in shaping papal policies. The session therefore provides insights into papal government and politics, as well as into the influence exercised by the papacy over Europe, and the influence of wider European developments on the papal curia.
