Abstract

The literary portrait of Prince Henry the Navigator has suffered a considerable change along the centuries according to literary periods, historical conditions, political interests, and the taste of every epoch. The three papers to be presented in this session intend to show how this figure inspired writers since his own time, starting with the medieval chronicles, going then to the posterior epic tradition and finally to the recreation of his mythical figure by modern and contemporary Portuguese writers.
