Abstract

The Congress sees the launch of a major new book, with the title of the session. The contents will examine the many influences on routes, particularly from the township, manor, and parish, and monastic, religious, and ecclesiastical organisations. Many features associated with the use of routes, such as gates, stiles, fords, and bridges will be considered, as will many buildings and complexes found along their routes, such as hospitals and hermitages. The much neglected varied and intensive use of inland waterways will be examined. The papers given by contributors will explore some of these themes.
