Abstract

The potential for identifying archaeological evidence of votive activities which represent the expression of ideological belief has, until recently, largely been ignored in settlement studies of the Anglo-Saxon and medieval periods in Britain. This is not least because such votive or ritual acts can, of course, be archaeologically elusive and ambiguous. Nonetheless, the realm of everyday life might well have been a particularly suitable place to express the world views and ideological beliefs which structured that life. Thus, these two sessions on 'Ritual and the Household' will comprise papers which demonstrate the potential for ideological and ritual expression in households and settlements of the 5th to 15th centuries.
