Abstract

The new interdisciplinary research project 'Monastic Wales' aims to establish a comprehensive monastic history of medieval Wales from the 11th to the 16th century. The three papers will present different aspects of this project, introducing (Paper 1) the project database and the current state of research on monasticism in medieval Wales; (Paper 2) the archaeology of one Welsh Cistercian house, discussing provision of hospitality in the region; and (Paper 3) the impact of the abbot and order of Cluny in medieval Wales. Together these papers will offer some thoughts on the role of religious houses in the religious, social, and cultural life of medieval Wales.
