Abstract

In 1152 the future Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine and brought the duchy of Aquitaine into the possession of the Plantagenet kings of England. It remained in English hands until 1453. However, the records of the English chancery recording the duchy's government – the Gascon Rolls (TNA C 61) – have remained unavailable in published form from 1317 onwards, and are the last major set of unpublished medieval Chancery rolls. The AHRC Gascon Rolls project has been established to remedy this, and the session will deal with the project, its methodology, the online resource, and its research potential.
