Abstract

Origin myths and foundation stories play a decisive role in the culture of remembrance in all human societies. Whereas previous research has analyzed the invention and social construction of these community-endowing and community-preserving tales, this session aims at examining the reuse and recontextualization of these stories. By way of examples such as the foundation myths of towns and bishoprics or the remembrance of battles it is shown how traditional texts and ideas were used for current interests in different historical situations and new social contexts, how new meanings were ascribed to them and how myths got transformed.
