Abstract | The Middle Ages is one of the most filmed periods in cinema, its enduring legacy furthered by one or two new releases each year; this year sees Ridley Scott's new take on Robin Hood. We might like to ignore them or deride them for their blatant inventions and inaccuracies, but their power to shape the public understanding of the past in the wider public (and thus potential Medieval Studies subjects students) is undeniable. This round table discussion will investigate how we might discuss something which has such a vibrant impact on the public imagination without falling into the usual mode of dissecting historical inaccuracies or deriding Hollywood's methods? This round table discussion will be followed by a screening of The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Participants in this round table include Louise D'Arcens (University of Wollongong, New South Wales), Kelly DeVries (Loyola College, Maryland), and Robert C. Woosnam-Savage (The Royal Armouries, Leeds). |
