Abstract | These papers examine texts in which Bede outlines his vision of the eschatological future. Paper -a (Darby) brings forth new evidence regarding the date and authorship of the Latin poem De die iudicii, a source that offers a graphic depiction of the last days. Paper -b (Palmer) considers the chronological re-structuring proposed in De temporum ratione, assessing the reception of this text within the context of continental attempts to 'rationalise' concerns about the approach of the year 6000 (800/801 AD). Paper -c (Wallis) sets Bede's commentary on Revelation within its historical and exegetical contexts, and it examines passages that illustrate contrasting aspects of Bede's eschatological thought. |
