Abstract

Various aspects of the social, economic, and political life of early medieval Ireland will be explored in this session. Through analysis of the organisation of kingship among the rulers of Mide, the political strategies of the Irish aristocracy will be investigated. An examination of the role and importance of the horse in the Irish economy will throw light on agricultural practice, transportation, and social status. Finally, a consideration of the early Irish diet will provide further insights into the experience of daily life, social hierarchy, and status.
