Abstract

Despite the growth of gender studies, the study of men as men in Byzantium is still minimal. This session aims to address this lack, with three papers on diverse aspects of men and masculinity in Byzantium. Geoffrey Nathan considers manhood within the rubric of the household through Claudian's depiction of Stilicho. Fotis Vasileiou traces the change of the perception of tears in late antiquity and investigates to what extent this affected the Roman ideal of masculinity. Myrto Hatzaki explores physical beauty as an attribute of the male body in Byzantium.
