Abstract

The study of religious communities in their regional context, and more specifically in the shadow of powerful neighbours, has increasingly attracted the attention of scholars in Britain and Europe. The three papers in this session examine aspects of regional monasticism, considering different religious orders (Cistercian, Augustinian, Benedictine) as well as different regions (the British Isles, Iberia, central Europe), in order to draw some wider conclusions regarding the role of monasteries in the regions, their religious lives and duties, their social networks with lay society and their political and economic realities.
