Abstract

This session will explore structures of power within and between late medieval communities in regions typically associated with strong communal and weak feudal rule. The case studies developed in the four presentations share the common finding that such communities were hierarchical entities that strongly interacted with and were complimentary to feudal structures. These results modify traditional interpretations of strong local communities being relatively autonomous from the feudal world, and shed new insights upon the general characteristics of communal rule itself.
