Abstract

Papers in this session will investigate procedures for dealing with religious dissent in the central middle ages. Speakers will examine several documented instances of heresy for evidence of how the ecclesiastical authorities, bishops in particular, tested different methods of reconciliation, and used these public restorations of religious order as venues to publicize their views on episcopal authority and the maintenance of social order.
