Abstract

Each of the papers in this session will consider the role of the laity in the medieval Irish church, and explore interactions between the lay and clerical communities. The first paper will examine the identities and motivations of the Hiberno-Norse, Irish, and English patrons of Dublin's earliest cathedral. The second will trace the shift in lay benefactions away from large monastic institutions to smaller parish organizations in the high and late Middle Ages. The final paper in the session will seek to answer the question: how many Irish priests lived and worked in English Ireland and how were they received by their parishioners?
