Abstract

Much can be learned about the wealth or poverty of an abbey by examining the architecture and finds from archaeological excavations, and studying the rental books. In this session, studies of the content and quality of a manuscript from Fountains Abbey, and the architecture and objects from excavations at Kirkstall provide a nuanced view of material and intellectual life in two medieval Yorkshire abbeys.
