Abstract

This round table discussion will bring together participants from five sessions dealing with the study of charters in the Anglo-Norman realm and its neighbours between the 10th and 14th centuries. There will be the opportunity to further examine issues of current concern associated with this type of source, with a particular emphasis on law and custom, cartularies and forgeries, and new approaches to this kind of evidence in the 21st century.

Participants include David Bates (University of East Anglia / Université de Caen Basse-Normandie), Pierre Bauduin (Université de Caen Basse-Normandie), Kathryn Dutton (University of Glasgow), John Hudson (University of St Andrews), Paul Hyams (Cornell University), and Charles Insley (Canterbury Christ Church University).
