Abstract

Launched at the Courtauld Institute on 15 December 2010, the Gothic Ivories Project is an online catalogue which brings together images and information about Gothic ivory pieces made in Western Europe from c. 1200 to c. 1530, scattered in collections around the world.
The vast amount of surviving pieces is in sharp contrast with the relative lack of knowledge we have of the context in which they were originally produced and later re-produced in the modern era. This session will show how the Gothic Ivories Project, combined with other tools and sources, is now opening new research paths.
