Abstract

In the last few years research has become increasingly interested in shaping of sacred space. The matter is an important one, as it mirrors the stratification of space as well as of medieval society as a whole. To gain an understanding how sacred space was delineated research primarily employed a model derived from the theory of Mircea Eliade assuming that it is the focus of religious activity that creates sacred space. This approach does not normally concentrate on the equally important assertion that medieval society itself had about the conception of sacred space. Therefore the proposed session will have a closer look at the shaping of sacred space by examining liturgical and exegetical texts, understanding the liturgy as echo of a conscious process of creation of sacred space. Along these lines the session aims for a more fully understanding of the conceptions of sacred space and the social implications it carried.
