Abstract

The first paper examines a late-medieval engraved brass plate in Nivelles (Belgium) in relation to its patron, Marguerite d'Escornaix, abbess of the chapter of noble canonesses of Sainte-Gertrude. The brass was made to commemorate the foundation of the daily masses she instituted at Sainte-Gertrude in 1461. The design, materials, function, and meaning of the Nivelles plate will be considered in the light of unpublished archival sources concerning Marguerite d'Escornaix's memoria provisions. The second paper focuses on private book collections as sources for memoria research.
