Abstract

Bishop Adalbero of Laon commented on how medieval life was divided into three orders: 'some pray, others fight, still others work'. Whilst Adalbero's distinctions were not strictly true for all places at all times during the Medieval period, the notion of the 'three orders' is still a useful concept when teaching. Aspects of the 'three orders' are explored in teaching the Middle Ages in Higher Education and Further education by using a wide range of tools from electronic or digital sources, manuscripts and material culture. The round table will address a number of themes in showing how different areas of medieval life can be taught by using the different resources and how new methodologies in teaching can bring a broader understanding of medieval life to a variety of learners.

Participants include Miriam Müller (University of Birmingham), Sam Riches (Lancaster University), Steven Vanderputten (Universiteit Gent), and Katherine Anne Wilson (University of York).
