| Abstract | Rules of Christian burial in the medieval period of Britain and Ireland have been discussed as strict and unyielding, in line with Rome's policy towards those who were baptised and those who were unworthy of burial in hallowed ground. However, recent results from archaeological and historical investigations have uncovered medieval burial practices and rituals that do not conform to the expected 'orthodoxy'. This session will discuss text-led expectations of Christian rites, and the deviancies and realities of burial practices in the medieval period using the latest archaeological and historical research, covering the beginning of the Christian era in Britain and Ireland through the 15th century. |
