Sponsor:The Wakefield Historical Society
Moderator/Chair:Paul R. Cavill, School of History, University of Leeds

Abstract

The court rolls of the Manor of Wakefield survive as an almost unbroken run from 1274 to 1925. They have recently been added by UNESCO to the Memory of the World register. Last year saw the publication of the rolls for 1433-36. This short illustrated talk will introduce the Manor and its lords, explain the role of its courts, and consider the value of the records for agricultural, economic, industrial, legal, and social history, and for women's studies. It will focus briefly on the latest volume in the Wakefield Court Rolls series as the only one so far published from the 15th century.
