Abstract

In this session, the Lollard Society explores the Congress theme in relation to the sacraments - here, baptism and confession - and sacramentals. Using perspectives generated by theology, history and literary studies, we investigate the diversity of Wycliffite interpretations of baptism and the relationship between these and avowedly orthodox theology concerning sacramentals in the 15th century. Poised between these polarities, our third paper asks how Hoccleve's poetry expressed and metabolised issues concerning the purposes, and the processes, of confession, particularly in the images of 'open shrifte' that recur in his Series.
