Abstract

Today the old topos of medieval women lacking rights is obsolete. Many examples show that women acted legally effectively in medieval societies and received acceptance. Still, the question remains what circumstances constituted this acceptance, and what its limits were. The session will discuss this point on three social levels: crusaders' wives in the 11th and 12th century, late medieval royal widows and the female members of the 15th-century Paston family.
