Session 907: Writing Medieval Italy: A Round Table Discussion

Tuesday 10 July 2012, 19.30-20.30

Organiser:Edward Coleman, Department of History,
Moderator/Chair:Chris Wickham, All Souls College, University of Oxford
Abstract

Much new and exciting research has appeared on Medieval Italy in recent years. This round table discussion will reflect on some of the major landmarks with particular focus on issues arising from works of historical synthesis. Topics for discussion will include: chronological, geographical, and theoretical frameworks, the differences between Continental and Anglophone approaches, the pursuit of new lines of enquiry, the revision of traditional interpretations, and the growth of interdisciplinary studies. Whilst concentrating on the central historiographical question of how we write about medieval Italy, the discussion will also seek to address the International Medieval Congress theme of rules and regulations.

Participants include Frances Andrews (University of St Andrews), Edward Coleman (University College Dublin), and Trevor Dean (Roehampton University, London).
