Abstract

The session deals with - at least - three different aspects of 'imperium': The duality between Emperor and Pope will be reflected by looking into the two suns theory (mainly making use of Dante's De Monarchia as 'summa' of his political thought). The main aspect will be the division of power. The concept of Heavenly Empire will contrast the medieval feudal with the mystical world, asking whether and how the two different concepts of empire influence each other. Another main focus will be the fact the empires can be constructed also on pergament. A medieval codex (the Vorauer codex 276) may be defined as reflection (and structure) of a whole large empire.
