Abstract

Regesta relay on a careful analysis of different kinds of sources: they do not only serve to collect information about the deeds of kings but also about the mentalities and about the relationship between the king and his magnate. This second session will focus on the Carolingian period and investigate the beneficiaries in diplomas 1) of Pippin I and Pippin II of Aquitaine, 2) of Charles the Bald and 3) of Charles the Simple. We will discuss their status and the mutual profit (for them and the king) of such a relationship and its meaning for our understanding of 'empire'.
