Abstract

This interdisciplinary session will explore methodological approaches towards a comparative study of manuscripts which transcends the topographic and cultural scope of European manuscript studies. One common denominator of all manuscript cultures is that each has developed a characteristic set of conventions regarding the visual organisation of manuscripts and their content. These are shaped by a manuscript's material characteristics as well as practices regarding manuscript production and reception. A comparative study of the mise-en-page in some European and Asian manuscripts (Wimmer) is followed by two case studies on Northern Indian and Nepalese manuscripts (Bhattarai) and 13th-century European music manuscripts (Maschke) which examine scribal strategies of dividing music and verse.
