Abstract | This panel will focus on the transmission of the literature of the Byzantine Empire to the Slavonic lands as well as the role of Byzantine intellectual authority and the modes of its transmission in the Slavonic world (Rus' and beyond). The session will discuss a number of understudied early Slavonic translations, their manuscript traditions, as well as questions of the authority of the Byzantine original texts and means of cultural and literary transmission from Byzantium to the Slavonic world. Speakers will place their studies in a greater context of the historical relationship between the Byzantine Empire and the Slavs. |
