Abstract

Papers in this session will look specifically at how bishops of the 'long 11th century' relied on rituals, performances, and other symbolically-charged means to either exclude or include individuals or entire groups from the regional societies they governed. By looking simultaneously at narrative and normative evidence, the papers will contribute to developing a new understanding of the relation between ritual scripts and ritual practice.
