Abstract

The session will present a series of attempts to pretend rulership, with special focus on the ways how this was tried or failure covered up, especially with the help of charters. The real powers behind grand charters issued by Carolingian rulers, Empress Matilda and her ways to assert queenship in England, and the attempts of Austrian Duke Frederick (the Fair) to gain the Empire against Louis of Bavaria will be discussed.
