Abstract

This second round table will explore the differences and parallels between medieval and post medieval theories and practices of empire. It will bring together experts on Europe and European Empires, on Africa, India, Russia, and Latin America. Key issues to be discussed will include the legacy of medieval concepts and practices in the early and late modern world, but also the key differences across time and culture. More importantly perhaps, when and why did (some) theories and practices change? Which one did, and which ones did not, and why?

Participants include David Bates (University of East Anglia), Eric Hanne (Florida Atlantic University), Dimitri Kastritsis (University of St Andrews), Alisdair Kocho-Williams (Aberystwyth University), Peter Alan Lambert (Aberystwyth University), Jonathan Lyons (University of Chicago), Martyn Rady (University College London), Gabriela Ramos (University of Cambridge), Richard Rathbone (Aberystwyth University), and Len Scales (Durham University).
